Why Did Wang Attend HKUST Instead of His First-Choice Schools?

Did Wang's Thesis Really Get Only a C?
Yes — and this is not an embellished campus rumour but a grade on record. Wang's undergraduate final-year project was titled "Unmanned Platform Flight Control System," aiming to let a remote-controlled helicopter hover at a designated position without constant stick correction from a pilot. But on defence day the aircraft failed to get stably airborne, and the project earned only a C※. That grade would ordinarily have derailed his plans to study abroad — but thesis supervisor Li Zexiang saw the other side of the C: this was a student who had twice taken his motion-control courses, whose engineering instincts and hands-on ability far exceeded his peers', and who had simply been let down by mechanical reliability on the day. Was DJI Directly Incubated by the "HKUST Robotics Team"?

What Role Did Professor Li Zexiang Play in This Relationship?
Li Zexiang is a professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at HKUST, founder of the University's Automation Technology Center and Robotics Institute, and the instructor who taught Wang's motion-control courses at undergraduate level. After Wang's thesis scored only a C, Li made an exception to admit him to the MPhil programme, and during Wang's early days of entrepreneurship in Shenzhen he provided strategic advice and introductions to early investors.
