The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) offers dual-degree and joint-degree programmes in partnership with prestigious institutions overseas, spanning the undergraduate, research postgraduate, and doctoral levels. These programmes cut across engineering, business, humanities and social science, and science faculties, with partner institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy, South Korea, and beyond.

1. Undergraduate Dual-Degree and Joint Programmes

1.1 School of Engineering + Business School: Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M-DDP)

The Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M-DDP) is Hong Kong’s first dual-degree programme of its kind combining technology and business. Administered by HKUST’s Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS), it enables high-achieving students to complete two degrees within five years:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or Bachelor of Science (BSc)
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

Designed for high-potential students who excel across humanities and sciences, the programme requires candidates to satisfy the graduation requirements of both the School of Engineering / School of Science and the Business School. It is a cross-faculty dual degree internal to HKUST, not an inter-institutional programme.

1.2 HKUST Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics (IEDA) Dual Degrees

According to the IEDA departmental page, the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics offers dedicated dual-degree options. For details of specific partner institutions and programme frameworks, please refer to the latest admissions materials published by the department.

1.3 HKUST–Waseda University Undergraduate Dual Degree

According to the HKUST Division of Humanities and Social Science (HSSE) page, HKUST and Waseda University in Japan jointly offer an undergraduate dual-degree programme for outstanding students in Global China Studies (GCS) and Quantitative Social Analysis (QSA):

Programme structure (4.5 years total):

  • The first three years are spent at HKUST’s Clear Water Bay campus completing the major requirements;
  • The remaining 1.5 to 2 years are spent at Waseda University, where students may pursue a degree in Political Science, Economics, or Global Political Economy, among others.

Admission requirements:

  • Applicants must be in their second year of study;
  • Cumulative Grade Average (CGA) of 3.5 or above;
  • English proficiency: TOEFL (PBT 550 / CBT 213 / iBT 80) or IELTS 6.0;
  • Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 certification is strongly recommended;
  • All HKUST degree requirements (including the capstone thesis) must be completed before departing for Japan.

Intake quota: The programme admits a maximum of two qualified students per year; competition is exceptionally intense.

Tuition arrangements: Once programme requirements are met, tuition fees at Waseda University are waived. Students are responsible for their own accommodation, insurance, visa, travel, and living expenses.

Graduates receive a bachelor’s degree from each institution.

1.4 HKUST–Washington University in St. Louis Joint Education Program (HKUST–WashU JEP)

HKUST’s School of Engineering has partnered with the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, USA to offer an integrated bachelor’s-master’s Joint Education Program (JEP):

Programme structure:

  • Years 1–3: complete all BEng requirements at HKUST;
  • Year 4: enrol at Washington University as an exchange student while fulfilling HKUST’s remaining credit requirements (including the capstone project / final-year thesis);
  • Year 5 onwards: eligible to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Washington University, subject to a separate, independent admission offer from WashU.

Eligible disciplines: All six departments in the School of Engineering — Chemical and Biological Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Preferential arrangements: Washington University offers participating HKUST students “preference in admission, augmented scholarship and/or research assistantship support”, although final admission remains contingent on a formal application process.

2. Postgraduate Level: Dual-Degree and Jointly Supervised Programmes

2.1 School of Engineering MPhil/PhD Dual-Degree and Jointly Supervised Programmes

HKUST’s School of Engineering collaborates closely with numerous top-tier institutions worldwide to offer MPhil/PhD dual-degree and jointly supervised programmes. All full-time research postgraduates in the School of Engineering are eligible to apply. Partner institutions include:

Partner Institution Country/Region Degree Awarded
CentraleSupélec France MPhil / PhD
Chulalongkorn University Thailand MPhil / PhD
Politecnico di Milano Italy MPhil / PhD
POSTECH South Korea MPhil / PhD
Sharif University of Technology Iran MPhil / PhD
University of Strathclyde* United Kingdom Also offers a separate dual master’s programme

*The joint programme between the University of Strathclyde and HKUST is detailed in the following section.

In these joint programmes, a student is supervised jointly by a faculty member at each institution. Upon completion, and following a joint review by both institutions, degrees are awarded either separately or jointly. Specific research topics are distributed across the School of Engineering’s “broad range of research themes”, though the official page does not provide an exhaustive list.

2.2 HKUST–University of Strathclyde Dual Master’s (Energy / Power Engineering)

According to HKUST School of Engineering news (December 2018), HKUST and the University of Strathclyde (UK) have jointly launched Hong Kong’s first joint dual-master’s degree programme, specialising in Smart Operation and Management of Future Energy and Power Systems, with tripartite support from CLP Power Hong Kong Limited.

The programme is positioned as a part-time master’s for working professionals, with teaching delivered across Hong Kong and Strathclyde. Graduates simultaneously receive a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) from HKUST and a Master of Science (MSc) from the University of Strathclyde. In January 2023, the programme’s first graduate completed their studies and entered Hong Kong’s power industry.

Separately, according to the University of Strathclyde official page, Strathclyde and HKUST also offer a 4+1 integrated bachelor’s-master’s pathway in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (4-year BEng + 1-year Strathclyde MSc). Qualifying HKUST undergraduates may progress to the Strathclyde MSc, which is recognised by professional engineering institutions.

3. HKUST(GZ) Dual Degrees and Cross-Campus Joint Programmes under “HKUST 2.0”

According to the HKUST(GZ) Fok Ying Tung Graduate School page, the “HKUST 2.0” framework explicitly supports student participation in:

  • Cross-campus dual-degree programmes;
  • Joint thesis supervision;
  • Course sharing;
  • Research facility sharing.

Formal joint-degree programmes between HKUST and HKUST(GZ) remain under continuous development and expansion; please refer to the latest official announcements for details.

4. CEMS Master’s in International Management Joint Programme

HKUST Business School is a member of CEMS – The Global Alliance in Management Education. Through the MSc in International Management (MIMT), students are required to spend one exchange semester at another CEMS member school (over 35 worldwide), complete language requirements and an internship, and thereby earn CEMS joint certification from both HKUST and the exchange institution. Institutionally, the programme sits between a joint degree and dual accreditation; the final degree is conferred by HKUST.
