According to HKUST's official alliances page, HKUST participates in over 40 international alliances; only the principal memberships and those with publicly documented records are listed here.

2. Business School Accreditations: AACSB and EQUIS Dual Accreditation

2.1 AACSB Accreditation: A First in Asian History

The HKUST Business School (formerly the HKUST School of Business and Management) received accreditation from AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in April 1999. Official records show that this was the first AACSB accreditation awarded in Asia, with HKUST and the CUHK Business School receiving the recognition in the same cohort.

As the official press release issued in 1999 noted with particular emphasis: "Never before in AACSB's history has any school earned accreditation less than 10 years after its founding" — the HKUST Business School was established in 1991 alongside the University itself, and when it received accreditation in 1999 it was merely eight years old. This record remains a rarity in AACSB accreditation history. AACSB accreditation covers all business and accounting degree programmes at the School, placing the HKUST Business School in the company of accredited institutions such as Harvard, Yale, and Wharton.

2.2 EQUIS Accreditation: European Quality Certification

The HKUST Business School also holds accreditation from the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS). The School's official materials describe it as "the first business school in the region to be accredited by both AACSB in the US and EQUIS in Europe".

Dual accreditation means the HKUST Business School simultaneously meets the highest quality standards for business education in both the United States and Europe — an accreditation combination held by an elite minority of business schools worldwide.

2.3 School of Engineering Accreditations

The School of Engineering's principal programmes also hold international professional accreditation, including from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the United States; details can be found in the School's in-depth institutional profile elsewhere on this site.

3. CEMS: The Global Alliance in Management Education

3.1 Membership

The HKUST Business School is a member of CEMS (Global Alliance in Management Education) and delivers the MSc in International Management (MIMT) programme, which is the only CEMS-designated partner programme in Hong Kong.

CEMS comprises over 35 of the world's leading business schools. Through this programme, HKUST students may spend one exchange semester at another CEMS member institution, studying alongside elite students from across the globe.

3.2 CEMS Annual Awards

In 2016, the HKUST Business School received the CEMS "School of the Year" award, making it the first Asian school among the 35+ CEMS member institutions to be honoured with this annual award (as of that award year).

4. International Research Collaboration

4.1 Bilateral Research Partnerships

According to HKUST's Office of the Vice-President for Research and Development (VPRD), HKUST has established bilateral research collaboration agreements with numerous leading research institutions worldwide, supporting cross-institutional joint project applications and personnel exchange visits among faculty.

4.2 Global Partner Institution Network

HKUST's official global partnerships page shows partner institutions spanning the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Known partner institutions include (non-exhaustive list):

  • Europe: Aalto University (Finland), Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Copenhagen Business School (CBS, Denmark), and others;
  • Americas: Boston College, Boston University, and others;
  • Asia: Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), City University of Hong Kong, and others.

The page indicates that the "Show more" function has not been fully retrieved; the total number of partner institutions far exceeds the institutions visible on the page.

4.3 Guangdong-Province-Level Research Collaboration

On 21 May 2024, HKUST, HKUST(GZ), and the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology (GDST) signed the "Work Plan to Jointly Support In-Depth Collaboration in Science and Technology" at a trilateral ceremony in Hong Kong. The signatories were Gong Guoping, Party Secretary of GDST; Professor Nancy Ip Yuk-yu, then Vice-Chancellor and President of HKUST (recorded by her official title at the time: then Vice-Chancellor and President); and Professor Lionel M. Ni, President of HKUST(GZ).

The agreement established a "1+1+1" joint funding mechanism to support cross-campus research teams, joint innovation platforms, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint laboratories, with a focus on developing the Greater Bay Area as an international innovation and technology hub. Following the launch, 24 collaborative projects between the two universities were recognised as Guangdong Province Science and Technology Plan projects (as of November 2025), marking the first instance in which Guangdong-Hong Kong cooperating universities received provincial-level recognition through the "Guangdong-Hong Kong University 1+1+1 Joint Funding Scheme."

5. Summing Up

HKUST's international alliance network spans multiple dimensions — Asia-Pacific, East Asia, engineering, artificial intelligence, and management education. The Business School's dual accreditation (AACSB/EQUIS) and CEMS membership place it in a well-documented leading position within the top tier of international business schools. Alliances at the School of Engineering level, such as ASPIRE and AOTULE, reinforce HKUST's core standing in the network of elite engineering universities in the Asia-Pacific. HKUST's role as the initiating founding member of AEARU demonstrates its early, leading role in shaping multilateral cooperation mechanisms in Asia-Pacific higher education.
